Mental health care is essential, and Medicare makes it easier to access psychological support when you need it most. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or just need someone to talk to, you may be eligible for subsidised sessions with a psychologist through Medicare.
What is a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a support plan created by your GP that outlines the type of mental health care you need. It’s designed to connect you with mental health professionals and gives you access to Medicare rebates for a set number of sessions each year.
Who can get a Mental Health Care Plan?
Most people with a diagnosable mental health condition, such as anxiety, depression, stress, or adjustment difficulties, can be eligible for a MHCP. You don’t need to be in crisis. If you’re struggling with your mental health in any way, it’s worth speaking with your GP.
How to get a Mental Health Care Plan
1. Book a longer appointment with your GP
Many practices require a longer appointment to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan. This gives your doctor time to assess your situation and talk through your options.
2. Talk openly with your doctor
Your GP will ask about your mental health symptoms, how long they’ve been present, and how they’re affecting your daily life. Based on this, they may prepare a Mental Health Care Plan for you.
3. Get your referral
Your doctor can refer you to a psychologist or mental health service. You can request someone specific if you have someone in mind, or ask for a recommendation.
4. Book your sessions
Once you have the plan and referral, you can contact us and begin booking your sessions. Our psychologists are registered with medicare and we accept MHCP referrals.
How many rebated sessions can you get?
Under Medicare, you can currently access up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year with a rebate. You’ll usually start with 6 sessions. After that, if you and your psychologist agree you need more, your GP can provide a review and extend it by up to 4 additional sessions.
Rebate amount: As of 2025, the Medicare rebate at Valion for a registered psychologist is $98.95.
What if I don’t want to see a GP?
If you prefer to pay privately or access other types of support (like online counselling or coaching), you don’t need a referral or Mental Health Care Plan. But without one, you won’t be eligible for Medicare rebates. You can also access your private health insurance for rebates if eligible.
What do you need to claim Medicare rebates?
Everyone’s mental health journey is unique, and so is the process of managing your Mental Health Care Plan. To ensure you’re able to claim Medicare rebates for your sessions, it’s important to keep your plan and referrals up to date.
To claim Medicare rebates for your psychology sessions, you’ll need a valid Medicare card, along with a referral letter and a Mental Health Care Plan prepared by your GP. These need to be arranged before your first appointment to be eligible for a rebate. You can learn more by visiting how to claim medicare rebates.
Ready to take the first step?
If you’re feeling stuck, anxious, flat, or just need someone to talk to, a Mental Health Care Plan can be a great first step. It helps you access professional care at a lower cost and puts you on a path toward feeling better.
